In 2000, Rudy VanderLans was obsessed with the music of Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band, and in particular the album Trout Mask Replica (1969), widely regarded as the masterpiece of Beefheart's musical career as well as an important influence on many subsequent artists. Besides the music, Vanderlans was fascinated by the back story of how the album came about. This inspired him to visit and photograph locations that were directly and tangentially connected to the making of Trout Mask Replica. It lead him from Hollywood to Glendale to the San Fernando Valley to Lancaster and Cucamonga, a roadtrip through Southern California, and the perfect subject for a photo book.

VanderLans also contacted John French, Zoot Horn Rollo, and Gary Lucas, three members of The Magic Band, and asked if they would each contribute a musical homage for a compact disc to be included with the book, providing the perfect soundtrack to the photographs.
